LAKE ONTARIO

After Niagara Falls, our bus headed towards Detroit.

First we stopped by the Whirlpool, a circular formation in the Niagara River made from soft sandstone that easily eroded when the falls were in this part of the river many years ago. The falls erode some feet every year. It has become a huge whirlpool and a very good place not to fall in.

Then we stopped at Niagara on the Lake for lunch. This was the most delightful little town. The gardens, parks and street landscaping was absolutely beautiful. The reason is that there is a School of Horticulture here and the students are responsible for looking after the gardens.

The streets were neat, tidy and colourful with beautiful houses and....

hotels. This is the Prince of Wales Hotel. It would be a super town for a holiday.

This gorgeous B&B overlooks the lake see below.

A picnic by Lake Ontario

After a few hours in this tranquil place we were back on the road for Detroit.

  6. Hi Diane
I love the picnic photo. And the B&B would be great to draw - that'll probably take me a while with all the details :). What a gorgeous place.

  10. Every town should have a school of horticulture! Did you get the name of the B&B? Lovely

  11. Wow! The people of this place - "Niagara on the Lake" are very civic minded and should be very proud of their work. Quite a beautiful place to holiday in/at. Reminds me of the civic minded and very garden conscious people of Toowoomba (Qld), Young and Armidale (NSW) and Swan Hill (Vic).
Is this town in Canada or the USA, looks like a Canadian flag in front of the B&B?
    Great photos as always Diane.

  12. Colin,

Yes I should have mentioned that we were still in Canada. From Niagara we followed the northern edge of Lake Erie back down into USA at Port Huron.

  13. It's been a long while since I've seen the falls. Your photos are awesome. That green whirlpool is beautiful.
I enjoyed seeing DC through your eyes. My son and his family live in Arlington so I do get to visit DC regularly.
I can hardly believe how much you have seen on your trip. You really did pack in a lot of touring. :)
I don't think I mentioned it in my last comment, but I LOVE your new header - a beautiful shot!

  14. Hi Diane, What gorgeous pictures, and your header is AWESOME. Yellowstone and the Tetons are on our list hopefully for next year.

We saw the Whirlpool and also saw Niagara on the Lake. That may have been where you all should have stayed instead of in Niagara Falls touristy area...

    Great group of pictures.
    Hugs,
    Betsy

  15. That truly is a beautiful town! The B&B looks lovely. We really enjoy staying in those when we go places. How wonderful that the horticulture students take care of the landscaping around town. What a great way to learn.
