"WHO'S BEEN SITTING IN MY CHAIR?"

Today we were very fortunate to be invited for a private tour of the new ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) building. A friend that I used to teach with recently married the chief engineer of the ABC in Queensland and he kindly offered to show us around the new building.
For many years the ABC in Qld was housed in a cramped old building in Toowong. Many announcers and workers contracted cancer while working there. A new building was needed. After much controversy between the political parties this beautiful building was built on a piece of prime real estate in the city. The architect company was  Richard Kirk Architects.
It is at South Bank between the Conservatory of Music and QPAC (Queensland Perfoming Arts Centre.) The blue building behind the ABC is the Convention Centre.
The G-20 meeting will be held here in the Convention Centre in November. There is still building modification going on behind the white barricade.

When I turn around looking from the front of the ABC The CBD is across the river. The Brisbane wheel on the right and QPAC on the left.

The back side of QPAC. I know it looks like a concrete bunker from this angle but it grows on you after a few years.

Now it was time to go inside the ABC building which also houses the Queensland Symphony Orchestra.

It was amazing inside. It is described by the architects as a Cross-platform media production centre consisting of radio and TV studios, post-production facilities, online services, orchestra rehearsal hall, music practice studios, open plan office space, communal staff hubs, staff training rooms, boardroom, retail tenancies, loading bay, basement car park, end of trip facilities, and associated plant and equipment rooms
The studio above is for the 612 ABC radio station. It is where my favourite radio announcer, Spencer Howsen sits.

Last year I was lucky enough to meet Spencer at a U3A meeting where he was the guest speaker.

Today I sat in his chair........

while TOH tried out the TV news reader's chair. He loved the tour as he used to be an announcer on Radio 4EB (Ethnic Broadcasting) back in the 80's.See here

  1. That is a lovely building Diane.
I do recall about the staff having health issue, so I am pleased to know about the new building.
We often hear about the problems, but don't hear sometimes that they may have been solved.

  12. No Denise. Too expensive for views I have seen from other buildings but its good for tourists to see the river winding its way through the city.

  13. For a modern building, it is nice and open to the street and looks welcoming and it seems to be a great location.

That the staff stayed in the old building for so long was a disgrace. Lack of evidence? The evidence was the the victims.

I hope you didn't press any buttons and interrupt a broadcast.

  15. Well that was very interesting, I am sure you both enjoyed yourselves immensely.
Certainly an impressive place - you would definitely require a full understanding of computers to
    work there

  16. What an interesting tour, but all these new buildings, are not to my taste. In Brussels too with all the European Union stuff they are growing like mushrooms !

  17. Wow. I remember the old building in Toowong. I have also been to the Ultimo studios in Sydney a couple of times to do radio interviews and their studios were not swish like this.
