ECLIPSE

This morning we had a partial eclipse of the sun in Brisbane. Further north in Cairns they had a total eclipse. People from all over flocked there. They had a lot of cloud cover but managed to see the final stages. We had a clear sky. We had to put a special solar filter paper in front of the camera lens so as not to damage the sensor. We wore special glasses to look at the sun.

My effort at photographing it wasn't the best. I read that focus should be set on infinity but I found they weren't sharp. You can click on the collage to make it bigger.

  1. Very good. I experienced a full eclipse when I was a kid, 1967 I think. No one seems to be writing about the the birds or how cold it quickly became. I'll have to do it.

  2. You made some very good pictures! I remember I once looked through a negative of a photo to a partly eclipse here, but we always have clouds so I didn't saw much of it.

  3. I, due to other things ( ha ha) watched it on the news. Like Andrew I remember one happening in the 1950's as a kid at Moree. It sure confused the chooks!!! For some strange reason, we all climbed onto the roof - I suppose we thought we would be closer - ha ha!
Next full one here directly over Brisbane is in 16 years time. If I am still around, I might climb onto the roof so as to get a better view!!!!
    Cheers

  4. You did great shots. I experienced a total eclipse in Port Moresby in the early 80s ... all the security lighting came on on the houses. We were out walking on the streets, something I would not do at night up there.

I saw an almost total one in Canberra a couple of years later ... but settled for taking a photo of the tele.

  7. Very impressive shots diane! Down here in Melbourne there was also a chance to see the partial eclipse - I took a quick peep through a neighbour's welding mask, which was the first time I'd ever actually "seen" one.

  8. Don't knock your photos, they're brilliant!

I remember an eclipse in South Australia in 1974. Dad was a high school science teacher and took us to his office to get some special telescopes and other gear out for us to enjoy it in more detail.

  9. Thanks for sharing your photos Diane - a good job too. How exciting to have actually seen it.
I was thinking how strange it must have seemed to people way back when they didn't know what was happening!

  10. I find it so interesting that during an eclipse, the sun can ruin a camera. Plus our sight. I don't know enough about them to know why. I can't remember when I saw one last. Maybe a couple of years ago.

  13. I think the result is amazing !! I have seen this only twice in my life, once when I was a child with my grandpa who had darkened a piece of glass with smoke ! That impressed me the most :) !

  14. I think you've done a great job of photographing the eclipse. I haven't had the opportunity to try photographing a solar eclipse, but I've had so-so success with lunar eclipses.

  15. Well done Diane, I haven't ever seen an eclipse, I have enough trouble with my eyes to not take chances. So I will enjoy the experience vicariously through your shots.

  17. We had one here some years ago. It's kind of eerie when it goes quite dark.

  20. Great job Diane! I like when you enlarge this the different stages are on a full background of black like moons stretched across the sky.
I saw an eclipse of the sun when I was young. Not sure how old I was. I do remember feeling a little fear at the eery like kind of darkness in the middle of the day. To be honest, quite how I imagine the end of the world. :)

  21. Maybe ot was the paper that was the culprit, not your camera??? We only saw a bit of it down south ...

  22. That's amazing -- and even though I understand (sort of) it's easy to see how primitive people would have been frightened of this phenomonon. I think your pictures are great.

  24. I wondered if you'd show us photos of the eclipse when I heard that Australia was one of the only places that saw it. Thank you!!!

  25. Night pictures are hard. Your eclipse made the news here, half way around the world from you.
