Six oldies decided to see in the New Year. We all met at Helen and Paul's, where we had a quick but delicious take away Chinese meal. Then we walked to Salisbury Station to catch the train to South Bank and the theatre.
There were not many on the station but the train was almost full of revellers, all going to South Bank for the fireworks display.
We arrived early for the concert. We watched the 8:30 fireworks and the light display on the treasury building. I had my little camera and no tripod so all the shots are blurry.
The blue moon looked like part of the city decorations. The Victoria Bridge is in the foreground.
Waiting for the Pop Orchestra to start the New Year Concert
The last song at midnight was Auld Lang Syne and then balloons were released and we had been given streamers to throw. It was a good concert with nice classical pieces .
Then we tried to find a good spot to see the fireworks but we weren't too successful. This is what fireworks look like without a steady tripod. There was a light in the way but it looks sort of pretty.
With thousands of others we headed for the station. We felt a bit strange as there were no others belonging to our generation.
Bill wasn't impressed with the crowded train, but at least we were lucky to get a seat. We were happy to arrive at Salisbury and fight our way off the train and walk back to Helen's house in the fresh air. We had a cup of tea and biscuit before driving home and dropping into bed at 2:30. We haven't done that for a long time.
What a wonderful and magic night this sounds and looks like. You are so blessed to be able to do this Diane. I was having so much trouble with my arthritis and leg, I was having trouble walking -- so it was early to bed with me. Maybe next year. Sure hoping.
ReplyDeleteCongrats Diane... That sounds like tons of fun--even for those who are 'our' age. I would have loved it. But--like you, I don't care for crowds either.. That's why we don't usually go anywhere like that.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year... Hope you get a NAP today!!!!
Hugs,
Betsy
You almost had the same idea as I had. I had enough of New Year's long lasting suppers always the same. so my friend and I went downtown Brussels went in the Casino, had a lot of fun of watching people. I gambled a bit too, I like roulette, lost 20 € and then we went outside to watch the beautiful firework Brussels had this year ! They said there were about 200.000 people watching it. Mr. G. prefered to stay home with the cats and watch TV.
ReplyDeleteBut we had a little supper before.
Hi Diane and BB
ReplyDeleteYes, I would have been pulling a face like BB on that train. I can just visualise the atmosphere and the antics!!! Still up until 2.30am! What fortitude!!! - I can't recall being up until then since New Years Eve/Morning in 1971 and every time I think of that night, I have fits!!!! I can assure you that 1972 commenced with one almighty hangover and I had to work in our hotel bar from 10.00am to 10.00pm - Mum and Dad took the day off! I am sure to this day, it was to punish myself and my brother!
Cheers

Very nice way to spend the new year with friends. The blue moon is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteWish you Happy & Prosperous New Year.
That sounds like a delightful way to ring in the change. I quite like being an oldie. Dont like the crowds and the way they swirl and I lose control. Not keen on the 2:30am bit. Even though I am often up at 2:30am it is because I have already had a coupla hours and simply wake up. Annoying, but things happen to us oldies.
ReplyDeleteLooks like a wonderful thing to do to welcome the New Year. Beautiful and fun photos.
ReplyDeleteA perfect way to ring in the New Year, a trip into the city with good friends. Lovely photos Diane. Thanks for taking us along and Happy New Year to all of you.
ReplyDeleteYou guys sure get out and have fun. I'm a go to bed and have a good sleep on NYE type of girl. I used to really adore the fireworks but living by the habour for a number of years I saw fireworks so often they lost their magic ... you'd be surprised at the number of times fireworks go up throughout the year ... though none as spectacular as the NYE ones.
ReplyDeleteWonderful shots. I love those fireworks.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year!
Good for you! And your photo of the moon is spectacular! Here's to "Oldies but Goodies" - we'll show 'em how to party :-)
ReplyDeleteGreat!! Being out around 2:30 a.m. seems a great adventure... ;)
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm so happy not being the only one to blur pictures... ;))
Happy New Year once again!!
Fireworks without a steady tripod looks really great!
