To Market, to market to buy a fat pig.........

I can remember my Mum singing this rhyme to me when I was little: To market, to market, to buy a fat pig, Home again, home again jiggety-jig. Yesterday we went to a market to buy some cheese not a fat pig. We want to make Raclette, which is a traditional Swiss meal. To do this we need a special Swiss Raclette cheese. We know a Swiss cheese maker who sells at the weekend farmers markets, so we found out that he would be at the Mitchlton Markets this weekend. That meant a trip through town as Mitchelton is a northern suberb and we live in the south. Blackwood St was blocked off and full of people buying fresh groceries. I wish we had markets closer to us. Bill found his Swiss friend Christian and they had a chat in their native tongue. We couldn't resist buying a few different varieties as well as the Raclette cheese.

Then we collected some fresh vegetables and fruit.

There were some colourful characters entertaining the crowd.

Bill couldn't resist some home cooked cookies to go with his coffee. Before going home we had lunch at Des Alps the Swiss Restaurant in the same street.

Then it was...Home again, home again jigety-jig.

Up the driveway past the camellia trees in time for afternoon tea and cookies.

  2. Isn't it funny how some rhymes from childhood never leave your grain? And that one has got such a rythmn to it. I want some of those cookies Bill got.

  3. Hi Diane, great market; love Raclette; a good meal to have in company with friends on cold days. My daughter makes every winter cheese fondue. She makes her own with matured tasty and swiss cheese. It works very well and tastes so good. I like it better, it is not so heavy, like with gruyere and swiss cheese.

  4. I love raclette and we do it quite often in winter. It's so funny when you are a little group ! We also eat it often at Christmas Eve because it's no work but fun.
If you want to have a look on my pictures of Venice it's here :

  6. Hello Diane - I was interested to read about the Raclette cheese being available at the Michelton Markets. I must tell my daughter who is married to a Swiss and thinks she would like to move to Brisbane from Canberra. She used to do Raclette when we visited her when she lived in Basel.

I've been wandering around various blogs tonight and I really can't remember how I came upon your blog, but I'm glad I did.

  7. I would so love to go there myself. Around here in hicksville town the only place we have to experience something like this is just road-stands that the farmers set up with their fresh veggies.

Lovely share. Hope your Wednesday is treating you well Diane.

  8. Wow, sure wish I had some of that great Swiss cheese to go with my corned beef. Now if I just had some marble rye to go along with them both! Yum, yum. My grandfather loved Kosher food, so this happened at our house a lot.

  9. I seem to remember that rhyme from my childhood too. What a super trip you had and I loved your photos. Funnily enough Gregg and I were talking about Raclette the other day. I had made grilled cheese sandwiches and overdid it on the cheese which oozed out of the sides and cooked in the pan. We nibbled on it and it was delicious. I said "I think I just made Raclette" and Gregg asked what that was. I said I thought it was a Swiss term for a kind of a fried cheese but wasn't really sure. Do you have a recipe? Not sure if I can get the Raclette cheese here but I haven't really looked.

  11. The markets look great.....With produce growing so close in the Lockyer Valleys and the plantations at the near north coast should have a diverse variety, cutting out those middle men and give the farmer more money for their produce...

An enjoyable post as usual.....You would be a wonderful ambassador for your area. Think of the millions spent on advertising Australia who who...pay you a million to do what you are doing now.....
