"I Love the Rough Sea"

Sunday 16th Jan 1949
Ship rolled a lot in the night. Loads sea sick again. Went on deck to see gale and storm. Lovely and rough and ship pitching and tossing. Diane and Len sick again, but I enjoyed breakfast. Starving again by 11 am although lots are looking rotten. Steak and onions for lunch. I had 2 helpings of sweets. I love the rough sea.
"I love the rough sea."

Monday 17th Jan
Lazy day. Slept and ate ice cream etc. Played Housie Housie but not lucky. Some won 9 pound prizes. Put clocks on another hour. Bed about 1:00 am.

Tuesday 18th Jan
Diane had shampoo at hairdressers. Another gale blowing. Pitching and tossing. Cloudy sky and cold. Washed and hung it out on the deck. Nearly blew me away while pegging it out. Dry in a jiffy. Strange feeling, ironing and swaying to and fro, but comfy kneeling down. Earlier to bed.

  5. I am thoroughly enjoying this Mum! It"s so great to see the photographs along with her words. I love her lust for adventure and for food! She is so skinny in the photos, can you imagine what it must be like to have unlimited access to so much food after so many years of rationing? What can you remember from the trip?

  8. I found this blog via english girl rambles via another one that follows my blog - I love the diary of your mother's impressions of the trip to Australia. I remember many people travelling on the£10 passage from Ireland in the 1960s and 70s when I was in school here. You seem to have had an interesting life, I have PNG friends living in Armidale, met them in Tanzania. Please visit my blog and leave a comment if you like. Greetings on Anzac Day - Ihave a post on Anzac cookies on my blog! with their history for me.

  9. Diane, I am loving this and your mother certainly had sea legs.

Condolences for the recent death of your brother. He lives in your memory and are richer for his being in your life ....gathered by the thoughtful words and photographs in your writings.

  10. Now I'm wondering if your mom loved the rough seas becasue she got to eat more or if it was because she found it invigorating?
