FIRE BREAK

Queensland Parks and Wildlife services are undertaking work in forests that abut urbane areas as the fire brigade have said there is a high fire danger risk to dwellings. So over the last few months we have had earth moving equipment forging wider fire breaks around our village. Trees and vegetation have been removed and huge mulchers moved in to munch up the fallen trees. The noise was loud. I tried to get as close to our border as possible to take some photos.

Dropping the logs into the mulcher.

The mulcher spitting it out at the other end making huge mounds of mulch, which they will spread later.

An amazing but noisy machine.

Once lovely trees turned into mulch but a necessity to keep us safe from bush fires.

You can see from this photo that I took from a plane when I was returning from Melbourne some time ago, how our village is surrounded by forest and neighbours with acres of bushland.

This is our street disappearing into the forest.

This is our apartment. My study is on the right.

This is the view from my study.
I love living here surrounded by bushland and close to forest walks but I am happy that we are getting a wider firebreak made around our village.

  1. Bit of a shame but necessary I suppose.

  2. That is terrifying those bushfires. Sad they have to remove the trees around your place but it must be necessary.

  3. Hello,
I love the forest around your home and neighborhood. But, being safe from the fires is important too.
We have a forest in front of and on the side of our home, I hope we never have a fire. Take care, enjoy your day!

  4. I see the importance of clearing that part of the forest. The fires Australia has experienced in the past were devastating.

  5. What a beautiful spot you are in Diane but I'm sure everyone will rest easier with a substantial fire break, the forest is pretty close there 🌳

  7. Much as I love woodland, in your part of Australia I'd be apprehensive living surrounded by it.

  8. As sad as losing the trees may seem, bush fires can be ever so much more destructive in terms of homes lost and perhaps lives. You do have a nice view both on your street and from your study, Diane.

  9. These days it seems best to be safe, even with the initial disruption. Those mulchers are really noisy, I've noticed them here.

  12. It's a shame the trees have tobe destroyed to make the fire break, but after all the problems Australia has had with fires over the years it's good that these preventive measures are being taken. I hope your village stays safe.

  13. Wonderful that they are being proactive for fire safety, but sad for the trees that have to be sacrificed. You do live in a lovely setting.

  16. A fire break in the forest is a good idea, Diane. I worry about fires here every summer. We had lots of rain in spring but then it has been unusually hot--record breaking heat--and fire is a constant danger. We have a committee here called "Fire Wise" and they communicate ways to re-do our landscaping to make it safer and how best to prepare for wildfires and evacuations. I take it all very seriously. Trying to catch up--the grandchildren keeping us very busy as they all play sports and we try to go to their games.

    1. Yes I saw how bad your fires were last year. I hope you don't have then this year. Thank you for your comments.

  17. The firebreak is a good idea and “my” Bill would have considered watching the work a nice bonus to living there ! It’s fire season here in Oregon now …we just returned from a visit to the dry part of the State and hope there are none this year.
