WATER, WATER EVERYWHERE....

You may have heard on the news about a water main, which broke and shot water many metres into the air in Los Angeles. It tore a gaping hole in the road as millions of gallons of water gushed onto the roads and nearby properties.

It caused flooding in the area especially at UCLA (University Of California LA campus)  where my daughter, Sonya works. It just so happened that her children were visiting her when the main exploded.

She took some photos and videos and sent them to us.
A reporter took her photo with boys and it was in the LA Times.

Fox was impressed but Banjo wasn't so sure about it all. Luckily her department and car park were on a hill and she was able to get her car out okay others weren't so lucky. Lower car parks were flooded.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My last post was about the inside of the State Library of Queensland well here are some shots of the outside.
Last post I mentioned "The Red Box" reading area. Can you see why it is called The Red Box?

Here is the "Terrace" with it's display cabinets full of  a 'cups and saucer' collection. Behind the terrace is an auditorium where we attended the keynote talk for the U3A winter school. Under the Terrace is a restaurant.

These two photos should be joined here, scroll up and down to get the idea.
The Library is two buildings joined with walkways . Another walkway goes right through to the other side where the modern art gallery stands. A great place to spend a day.

  1. That was certainly one massive water spout coming from that main. I remember commenting to hubby at the time that you wouldn't want to be just walking past when it blew

  8. I am working up an idea of a new photo gallery on books. I don't get out in the country enough these days to build on the Royal collection but a book collection is quite another thing. Will mull over it on the weekend.

  10. Glad Sonya and your sweet grandchildren were okay walking home. I watched the news clip on the TV the other night. That was quite an event, so much water wasted and being in drought conditions. I heard one person had to be rescued from their car. Let's hope no more of those old pipes burst.

All great photos Diane, that's an impressive building.

  13. Diane, I am so glad your daughter, Fox and Banjo made it to her car with no problems. I saw this water main break on the news. It is sad all that water was lost, while there is a drought. Have a happy weekend!

  14. Terrible when it rains so much, we also had flooding about 30km from our home. We were lucky not to be affected.

    Greetings,
    Filip

  16. Most modern architecture fails to please me, but I really like the library.

Not too many people can claim to have had their photo published in the LA Times.

  17. When I heard about the UCLA water main break, I didn't think about your daughter working there. I imagine she didn't expect such excitement when she took the boys with her.

The library is as impressive on the outside as it is on the inside. I like the red box.

I did read/hear about that water main breaking in LA... Until this blog post, I never thought about your kids living near by... Glad it didn't effect their home though.

  23. I'm glad they were OK. Here we are traveling in Alaska and this is the first I have seen about this whole thing. (Bill said he'd read it on line.... so he told me some more about it.) So funny to hear tabout this from Australia! What a strange new world.

  24. I hadn't heard about the water main. The water was coming down last night like there was a burst water main in the sky. Love the library pictures - after pubs and bookshops, libraries are my favourite places.

  25. While I missed the story of the LA water main break, good to know your daughter and family were Ok but too bad about the flooding for others.

  26. Yes, that was a lot of excitement in Los Angeles and the last thing we need with this drought! It seems to be an ongoing problem though, burst water pipes, I think the infrastructure is just getting too old.

    The library is so interesting!
