NOSTALGIA TIMES TWO

We flew to Sydney last week to visit our daughter, Carol and SIL, David. They have taken leave from work for four months to travel around the world. So we went to say goodbye and spend a few days enjoying their company. The weather was wet and cold but it didn't dampen our spirit.

Carol took us to the Sydney Tram museum, knowing that her dad loves transport museums. The Bondi tram became famous as a saying was coined about it. He "shot through like a Bondi tram." Apparently, the tram picked up speed down the steep hill to the beach.

We went for a ride on an old tram from Brisbane. This made TOH nostalgic as he used to ride the Brisbane trams in the 60's. Trams stopped running in Brisbane in 1969 but we wished they hadn't. The tram took us from Loftus to Sutherland and back to The Royal National Park. This was nostalgic for me because I used to live at Loftus and catch the train to school in Sutherland and to The Royal National Park on weekends.

The museum is manned and maintained by volunteers.

After our fun trip we drove into Sutherland for lunch in a cafe right opposite my old school. The memories came flooding back.

  5. What a wonderful trip your daughter and SIL will have. Although you'll miss them; especially BB and those tram trip added to the nostalgia! I remember riding in trams when I was little; in Durban and Johannesburg during the late fifties/early sixties. Good to see you again, Diane.

  6. You have two adventurous daughters - they obviously take after you. Hope Carol and her husband have a great trip. After they got rid of trams in this country, various cities are bringing them back again.

  8. Four months, around the world . . . I think I am jealous! What a wonderful adventure and smart to do it while they are young. Since I'm a country girl, I've never ridden on a tram, old or new. Fun that they have restored one of the old ones for your trip down Memory Lane.

  10. Ah thanks Diane. After Bill's showing of the trams, I have been going "nuts" trying to remember the Bondi tram saying - "Shot through like a Bondi tram"!!!
Yep, that last hill descent to the beach was great.
I have a funny feeling that the annual city to surf race, that tram hill is the last hill on the course!
    Anyone know?? Sydneysiders??

  12. I didn't know there was a Sydney Tram Museum, I love transport museums and would love to visit it and ride the old tram. In what part of Sydney is it

  13. Jo-Anne: It is in Loftus in the Sutherland Shire south of Sydney. It is on the main highway to Wollongong, the Princes Highway, M1. But you have to go past it and do a U-Turn to get to the entrance.

  14. The older you get the more nostalgic you are it seems. I have the same feeling seeing things from the fiftees and the sixties, that really look coming from another century.

  17. Happy Labor Day... Hope you are having a great day. We finally got some rain here this weekend (which we needed)--but this week promises to be a hot one... I'm SO ready for Fall...

Wow--your kids getting to take a 4 month leave of absence from work is amazing... I hope you chronicle their trip and tell us all about where they will be.

Great Railroad Museum.. Bet your Sweetie would LOVE to volunteer in a place like that --as much as he loves trains.

    Hugs,
    Betsy
