We had a worrying time but its all over and we are safe and our unit did not get any damage. The worst was the waiting for Tropical Cyclone Alfred to cross the coast. It was a category 2 but moving very slowly. so we were living in apprehension for three days or more. We saw it tearing the Gold Coast to shreds and it was scary thinking that would happen to us. Finally, Alfred crept slowly towards us and started losing power as it hit the coastal islands. We had howling winds and pouring rain but luckily we stayed safe. Our unit didn't leak and nothing was damaged outside. The worst part was that we were without power all of the next day. So many trees had blown down electricity wires. There was 350 thousand homes without power. Some are still waiting to be reconnected.
We had cold turkey sandwiches and sparkling water for tea/dinner. We played board games in candlelight to pass the time. The next day it just poured rain non stop all day and night. The cyclone had turned into a low pressure and it was stationary over Brisbane. Many creeks and rivers flooded. Silly people drove through flood waters and had to be rescued. Only one life was lost but many houses ruined by flood water. People were madly filling sand bags to stop the water entering homes and businesses.
I drove to the doctor today (check up after cataract surgery 3 weeks ago.) On the way I saw many huge trees on the ground. Some houses were flattened by fallen trees. We were so lucky to have missed the bullet.
When the rain eased a little I walked down the hill from our unit to the front of the village and took a few photos my shoes and jeans got soaking wet even with a big umbrella.
Imagine seeing a giant tree crashing down on the top of the family home :( Wishing you safety from the violent rain, violent wind and no electricity.
ReplyDeleteIt's pleasing to know you are all ok there, very lucky indeed.
ReplyDeleteI bet your eyes are good.
Take care.
So glad that you are both okay and thanks for letting us know. Sounded like a doozy!
ReplyDeleteWow, you really did cop it, but thankfully no damage. The water levels are amazing.
ReplyDeleteThank goodness you are okay and that your unit didn't suffer any damage. I'm sure it was still frightening listening to the storm all around you but hope it is over now for a long time to come. xx
ReplyDeleteI am so glad you are safe. It is sad to see and hear about all the storm's destruction.
ReplyDeleteTake care, have a great day!
I am so happy to see you pop up and know the storm is gone and you and your home are safe.
ReplyDeleteThat's a lot of rain! Glad you stayed safe and undamaged, though it must have been a bit stressful. Seems like these severe weather episodes are increasing worldwide.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like even at your village, there will be quite a lot of cleaning up to do outside.
ReplyDeleteI was watching the news and it sounded bad in places and then no electricity. I was worried about you two, but thanks for letting me know that you are well and no immediate damage close by. Take care. I am having one of my eyes done at the end of the year, the other is perfect with not problems at all.
ReplyDeleteKeep safe, cheers t'other Diane.
Good to hear. Glad there was no flood damage. How did your daughter fare?
ReplyDeleteWow, I'm so glad you are okay and your whole complex too. Such a scary time. That's a lot of people without power, and here I was complaining about not having power for 2 hours. Sad...
ReplyDeleteGreat photos of the might waters. Glad you are also up and walking again.
Thanks for your comments on my blog and our friendship across the many miles.
Sue
Oh my goodness, how scary. Praise God you didn't suffer any damage and are safe.
ReplyDeleteYou took some great pictures. I specially like the last one that shows the flowers and landscaping survived the storm as well.
Yes, the waiting was awful, but such a relief that we most definitely dodged a bullet. Mt Warren Golf Course was flooded by the Albert River, but this time round, the water was well short of our back fence.
ReplyDeleteMy goodness how awful, must be horrible to live days in fear of such a catastrophe. Fortunately you were lucky ! I had seen a bit in the news but they only said that it was in Australia, as if Australia had the size of a stamp. So I didn't know if some of my Australian friends were hit by this storm. I have seen Thun on TV isn't this the town Bill comes from ? It was about a famous singer who had settled down there to live in peace. Beautiful landscape from what I have seen.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Diane, for sharing that you and Bill and your home made it through the storm safely. Playing board games by candlelight was a wonderful image😀
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness!! SO happy you all safe and sound!! How frightening for you!!!
ReplyDeleteBig hug
Donna
Weather like this is so frightening, pleased you are safe and sound.
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
So glad to see that you did not have much damage in your area--I did not realize that cyclone was so close to you! Climate change is bringing so many destructive storms worldwide.
