On 26 January 1788, Captain Arthur Phillip raised the english flag in Sydney Cove, where he started a penal colony for English convicts. From those days through many hardships we have become a a great country. It does have its critics, mostly first nations people as some of them see that date as invasion day.
Our flag was made official in !901 when we also became the Commonwealth of Australia and ruled ourselves instead of being a colonies of Britain. The flag has the Union Jack to show that we belong to the British Commonwealth. The big star has seven points one for each of the 6 states and 1 for all the Australian Territories. The other stars make up constellation of The Southern Cross, only seen in the southern hemisphere.I migrated to Australia from England as a child in 1949. I have loved growing up here and I am a true blue Aussie. I have a certificate of citizenship to prove it. Over the years we have travelled all over the country and have been amazed at the diversity of landscapes and people.
Here are some of my memories:
Happy Australia Day!
ReplyDeleteIt was a bit hot today to go down to the beach, but I love your top photo. So I received two Australian flags from the local shops, took two of the grandchildren out to lunch instead of the beach and gave them the flags.
Hope you had a good Australia Day yesterday, the 26th Diane.
ReplyDeleteLovely photos of your memories too
Happy Australia done. You have chosen those photos well giving us the perfect selection of the wide variety of scenery in Australia.
ReplyDeleteFor the time, they are wonderful photos and clearly show your talents at the shutter button, and probably other controls.
ReplyDeleteHappy Australia Day. I loved your choice of photos. I have only spent a few months in total in Australia but in those times I managed to see enough landscapes to experience the diversity that your photos have so ably shown.
ReplyDeleteGreat photos! Happy Australia Day! Take care, enjoy your day! Have a wonderful week!
ReplyDeleteHappy Aussie Day, and it always amazes me that your photos mimic the USA so much. I liked seeing all the different places and different types of landscape, just like we have here... your flag is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteYou do have a beautiful country. It was on our list to visit but now such a long plane trip is not something we can face. I'll have to enjoy our blog instead.
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing land. It has always been on my "Bucket" list. Sadly I don't think this one will ever be fulfilled.
ReplyDeleteHappy Australia Day to you and yours. I love these photos of the diversity of your country. They are so enticing.

Australia looks like such a fascinating place! Bill Bryson wrote a book, "In a Sunburned Country". It was so funny and he spoke of his love of the Australian people. How I wish I could see it!
ReplyDeleteI would love to be able to travel the countryside in a camper. It's such a diverse country with so much to see...and photograph!
ReplyDeleteBelated Happy Australia Day wishes, Diane, and many thanks for showing off the beauty and diversity of the country. I enjoyed the one of youself seated on the beach near the water and the last photo which looks like art.
ReplyDeleteI would love to visit again but air fares have gone through the roof and Nigel could not last that long on a plane any more. 12 hours to RSA is more than he can really enjoy. It looks like a back op for him might have to happen soon as well so then travel will definitely be limited! Lovely post, t'other Diane
ReplyDeleteAustralia has every type of natural beauty, I see from your photos. Happy Australia Day.
ReplyDeleteI am late but I hope you had a Happy Australia Day. I enjoyed all these wonderful photos! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteWe are blessed to live in this country of contrasts, as shown in your photo collection.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos of your Australia, Diane!
