VALENTINES DINNER

Yes I'm a bit out of date with my topic. We've been a bit busy this month with organising Bill's 80th birthday party. (Next Post). But first, we had our village monthly dinner last Wednesday with a Valentine theme.
We had a romantic French Menu, which I ruined by folding it up to bring it home. The food was delicious.

The Rochedale State High School catering students once again have come to help and learn. This is the first time for this new Year Twelve intake of students. They did a great job.
Our Residents Chair, Ann, is also the leader of the Dinner Committee. They organise our dinners and guest speakers. This is Craig Zonka, the ABC Radio Breakfast announcer. He gave an interesting talk on how he left Law and became a journalist He told us of all the places he has visited and people he has interviewed. He was full of beans and entertaining.

The students delivering the delicious dessert, while a teacher supervises.

We forgot to get a photo of ourselves so you get one of our friends, Rob and Trish. I take photos of village events for the newsletter and wall posters.

At the end of the night our Chairperson always thanks the students, the teachers, the chef and his helper.

Then we take it in turns, street by street, to wash up in a 90 second commercial dishwasher and clean the kitchen. We fold up the tables and stack the chairs in the store room and vacuum the floor. Those over 80 are exempt. The students don't do it because their parents pick them up at 8:30 to go home to do their homework and get ready for another school day.

  1. These are just such great gatherings that can only be held in places such as where you live and where our elderly friend lives.

However to give our building its due, tomorrow night is a wine tasting and sausage sizzle gathering for residents, the wine tasting being hosted by the wine shop across the road. Naturally it expects a few orders for wine by people at the event.

A 90 second dishwasher has me impressed.

  2. Normally we eat fresh fruit salad for sweets, or perhaps with yoghurt. But it is plain, and sometimes boring. Your sweets look a bit exotic and totally delicious.

  3. Hello,
Your community's dinner and events always look wonderful. The desserts do look yummy. It is great that the students come and help out. A rotating clean up crew is a great idea. Take care, have a great day and happy week ahead.

  4. You get to do so many neat things! Love how there's a high school class for catering!! They got rid of Home Economics here in the States a long while ago..AND Cursive writing....I think it's been replaced with Gender Identification and How to Whine classes! Of course I'm being facetious but...our schools are being "dumbed down"...we are SO upset about it! Don't send your child to the USA for "higher learning"...no longer exist! Only indoctrination...
    A 90 sec washer? Wonderful!
    hugs

  5. Looks like fun. I'd always imagined that breakfast-time announcers were only chirpy for a few hours every morning - it must be hard to be so entertaining in the evenings as well.

  6. I always enjoy seeing your residence gatherings. The dinners look so yummy and well-presented. Having students serve is a plus! it's good to have young people around us as we get older. I guess Bill will soon be exempt from dishwashing!

  7. Lovely meal Diane. It's wonderful how the students can practice their skills on real people.

  8. What a nice Valentine's celebration ! I had to laugh about the fanciful names of the food ! It's typical French. An scrambled egg with tomatoes would be, "Red sunshine tomatoes on its yellow bed of scrambled eggs !" Sounds good. We always laugh about the fantasy the cooks develop to name their chicken soup !

  11. What a lovely gathering Diane. I love the idea that the students come and help. Good experience for them and I think them being around the older generation is all goodness. Ann did a great job organizing such a delightful evening. The menu sounds enticing! It would have been interesting listening to Craig also. Thanks for sharing another lovely event.

  12. OK I'm moving there tomorrow since I get to enjoy all the fun and will be exempt from cleaning up ;>) (Your Bill is too now!) Your Village is really a perfect choice (for the over 80 and under 80 crowd both it seems like!)
