NEW FARM PARK AT JACARANDA TIME

It is Jacaranda time in Brisbane. It has come early this year due to the very warm winter that we had. The Jacaranda Tree originally from South America, now flourishes here in Australia. Yesterday we drove to New Farm Park to photograph these beautiful purple trees. New Farm Park is in the inner city suburb of New Farm. In convict settlement days the park used to be a farm. In 1846 it was a race course but in 1913 the council acquired the land and made it a park. There were cricket nets, football fields, tennis courts and picnic areas. Today it is mostly used as a picnic area and there is a big children playground as well as a Kiosk, Coffee shop, The Power House Theatre and Watt Restaurant. The Brisbane River runs along the edge of the park and there is a City Cat boat terminal. The park was crowded even on a week day.
We drove around the ring road looking for a parking spot.

Many of the old Jacaranda trees had to be removed as they were becoming dangerous. So new ones have been planted.

We found a park and set off for the coffee shop...........compulsory for my man. I like to see the city peeping through the trees.

The new and the old trees. Fortified with coffee, Bill enjoyed walking, photographing and trying to learn more about his camera.

Besides the Jacaranda trees there are many garden beds in the park. The rose garden is especially pretty.

After a few hours and hundreds of photos we found our little red car and drove home.

On the way home there were many Jacarandas lining the city streets.

  3. This is the one things I miss from Rhodesia, we had many jacarandas there including a few white ones, one of which we had in our garden. One main street in Salisbury (now called Harare) had white blue, white blue the length of the street it was stunning when in full flower. Then of course in South Africa, Pretoria is called the Jacaranda city.
Beautiful photos that bring back many memories for me. Thanks t'other Diane

  4. Hi Diane, such beatufiul trees and awesome colours. What a lovely park. My first Matric Farewell dress colour was Jacaranca blue. In Pretoria (as Diane -Rhodesia mentions) the Jacaranda City, when the blooms begin to drop it's exam time for varsity students!

  7. I saw a jacaranda for the first time in Alice Springs. It was love at first sight. It has to be the most beautiful tree I have ever seen. Terrific views of the trees in the park and lining the streets.

  9. What a show! I don't think they grow in our climate, unless I'm being particularly unobservant.

  10. I love jacaranda trees, and there are a few growing where I live in California, but this display of so many is heavenly. Thank you for sharing. Recently on my blog I posted photos of my neighbor's yellow blossomed tree, and bloggers told me they are yellow jacaranda, something new to me.

We didn't come into Brisbane whilst up that way, just visited B's Auntie as usual, and I think you were away at that time.

  20. My favourite time of year in Brisbane. Except when I was at school and it meant it was nearly exam time. Now I see them and feel my sister close, she died when they were in bloom and one of the last words she spoke was, "The jacarandas will be out soon." I can't think of a lovelier reminder of her life. Your photos are glorious.

  21. Jacarandas are one of the most gorgeous trees - such a fabulous color! I'm happy we also have them here in California to enjoy, but it'll be a few months before ours begin to show their colors. Your photos are fantastic.

  22. I have never seen a Jacaranda, let alone several - stunning! It reminds me that the Jacaranda Club in Liverpool was an early Beatles' venue - presumably the exotic name was uplifting in humdrum dowdy surroundings!

  23. They are so beautiful! We see a few of them when we're in Florida but nothing as lush and gorgeous as yours....I'm in awe.
