THE MOST REVOLTING THING

The rain has almost stopped at last, just a shower now and then. I hope it stays fine for the thousands of holiday makers this Easter Weekend. We always stay home at Easter now that we are retired as it is madness on the roads and accommodation is twice as expensive as usual. However, I did spend a little time in the garden. Everything has grown green and quickly except the daisies which drowned in all the wet.

One of the worst things about the rain is the appearance of the most revolting fungi you have ever seen or smelt.
These gross looking and smelling things are popping up all over the garden. You can see new ones just emerging from the the ground. They are called Stinkhorn Fungi.

I can't help thinking they look like penises and they smell even worse.

They have a sticky cap and the flies love them. The smell is like something has died and in the evenings its the worst and even wafts in the windows.

This one is a bit limp. He mustn't be very excited to see me. After a few days they collapse and disappear but then a new crop appear. When the ground dries out they won't grow any more until next wet season.

  1. I'm a little hesitant to comment as well. Sorry those things are so stinky but I enjoyed the giggles in your post.

  9. LOL, Diane. Waiting to see what some of the men who regularly comment on your blog have to say about this one. ;-) It looks like the flies like them. Hope the smell goes away soon.
If it makes you feel better, our Bradford Pear tree will soon be in bloom. Although the blossoms are glorious, they really stink. Something like wet tennis shoes.

  11. Really, I have never come across smelly fungi. If you had not told me so I would have thought they were attractive.

  13. I just couldn't stop laughing Diane. For some reason it reminded me of that old nursery rhyme:
    Mary, Mary quite contrary how does your garden grow;
With a penis here and a penis there; All standing in a row.

  14. Hi Diane, I understand about crowds at Easter. Today, we got an invitation to drive to the Smokies and have a picnic lunch with my son and family... There were TONS of people there today --celebrating Spring Break and Easter Weekend... Yipes!!!!! BUT--it was worth it, just being with the family!!!!

We've had lots of rain also--and so far, no spring much here. Not sure what will happen, but I wonder if we'll just go from Winter to Summer!!!! Hope not.

That Fungi is UGLY for sure... I've never seen any that look like that.

Happy Easter to you and yours. God Bless.

    Hugs,
    Betsy

  16. OMW Diane, scream out loud with laughter at your comments. When I opened your post and saw the first images, I thought "Ewgh they JUST look like..." and then you said what I had thought! They look awful and its even worse that they stink. We have large mushrooms (smell-lesss, thank goodness) in our garden after all the rains here in Tz and I'm forever removing them (with gloves!)as I don't want the cats to even sniff at them. Hope you and Bill had a wonderfully restful Easter weekend. Greetings from East Africa: Jo

  17. Strange looking things - but wonderfully taken photographs. Everything is still wet and cold over here : we are off to Spain for a short holiday next week - if the sun wont come to Alan, Alan will go to the sun.

  21. Um, yes, difficult to comment here. Let me see, stinky things shouldn't be growing in people's gardens.
How's that for a politically correct comment?

  22. Your title and then the first photo and I knew where you were going. You can't help but compare. :)
Sounds like Stinkhorn is a very appropriate name.
For your sake I hope it dries up soon.
Hope you had a wonderful Easter.

  24. I had a laugh at your description of the fungi, as thats exactly what Barry said they looked like, and as he didn't read any further he didn't get to see the last sentence.
