So 256 years ago Captain Cook planted the English flag in Sydney Cove and claimed the land for England. It wasn't until 18 years later that the first settlers arrived in eleven ships with Captain Arthur Phillip in charge. Most of the settlers were convicts and Marines. After a very hard start when the settlement nearly starved waiting for supply ships from England, things slowly improved and our wonderful nation was born. Every Jan 26 we celebrate Australia Day. Many people have parties and BBQ's. Many go to the beach and others go to special luncheon functions. Unfortunately, the weather is extremely hot especially in the south, Adelaide and Northern Victoria are expecting temps in the 40's C. We are also having hot humid weather here in Brisbane. Our village is putting on an afternoon of activities and a sausage sizzle. Hopefully things will cool down by then. Luckily, our hall is air conditioned.
So we started off singing Aussie songs like this one:
Then we played games:Thong throwing. (In Australia a thong is a flip flop not underwear) We had to get it into a bucket. Prizes were given to the winner.
What a lovely and non contentious way to celebrate Australia Day. Men wearing brightly patterned shirts seems de rigueur.
ReplyDeleteFun party and images. Happy Australia Day!
ReplyDeleteHahaaa....thong throwing...I tried to picture panties being thrown without much success! Lolol

Thong in my local area is a flip flop and/or undies. One name for both. Funny how that is. Looks like a fun game. Cheers, Ivy.
ReplyDeleteWonderful celebration!
ReplyDeleteHappy belated Australia Day! It looks like you had a fun day to celebrate your wonderful country. xx
ReplyDeleteSeems you all had a fun day Diane. Love that song by the Seekers.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like lots of fun. Nothing like that ever happens here! We can't complain thought our local mayor puts on events which sadly we will miss the best ones of the year while we are in South Africa. Keep well, t'other Diane
ReplyDeleteBelated Happy Australia day What a great day you had games, dance and food What else do you need
ReplyDeleteYour community always celebrates events so well. The heat and humidity was certainly unbearable. We met with our neighbours for lunch and then spent the afternoon in the shady end of the pool.
ReplyDeleteDiane, another fun celebration and those games and food looked like fun and delicious.
ReplyDeleteHappy Australia Day Diane. Looks like another wonderful celebration. The world’s weather seems to be pitching us about doesn’t it? I hope you all get some cooler weather soon.
ReplyDeleteI haven't heard "I am, you are, we are Australian" for ages. Great music for a fun evening.
ReplyDeleteSounds as though it was very good fun, well done the Workshop boys, the food looked delish!
ReplyDeleteWhat a nice celebration ! I have read a lot about Australia from the very beginning until the 80th very interesting ! (your book too !)
ReplyDeleteLovely photographs, a nice celebration.
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
What a fun evening. I enjoyed listening to that clip. I haven't heard The Seekers singing for years.
ReplyDeleteI came back to catch up a bit with what I've missed -- you had a wonderful Australia Day and I loved seeing everybody having so much fun. But I also wanted to thank you for finding my new blog and to say I thought the comment about your nephew's visit to Costa Rica was so interesting (I'd love to have seen his pictures and hope you don't compare my feeble efforts to his!) but also to hope that he is totally recovered from that electrolyte scare. I'm never going to drink one of those now after reading your comment!!
