HOME AT LAST

After a CT scan of his lungs showed Bill's lungs were clear, he was allowed to come home even though they wanted to keep him for another two weeks for rehab. He wasn't keen on this idea so I said we had our own physiotherapist who will do the rehab and our health fund will pay. So he was transported home in an ambulance as he is still not agile enough to get into and out of the car.

The ambos bring him right inside the unit and help him into a chair.

He was happy to be home.

I made him his favourite lunch. Continental frankfurters and sauerkraut because he had lost his appetite from the antibiotics. He enjoyed it but couldn't eat it all.

We bought a new chair which is easier to get in and out of as well as having a variety of positions. He's learning how to fly it. It actually stands him up.

Bill used to do all the cooking now there is a new cook in the kitchen. I have to learn all over again after he has cooked for the last fifty years. Chicken, mushrooms, spinach and egg noodles. Easy stuff for the beginner. Unfortunately Bill is still coughing but is walking on a walker a little better. Slowly, slowly getting better.

  3. Good news but not entirely. I dread having to learn how to cook, well I can basic things, if I am alone or have to care for my partner. But you just do what you have to do. Do you have an aged care package?

  7. Thank you for the update and this is good news and is what I would do if needed. I think being home is good for him and he will heal better. the chair is a great invention. Oh no on cooking. i am the cook here but do the easy stuff likeyou are doing because have never bee able to follow a recipe and have it come out the way it should. prayers for further recovery and for strength for you as you become the caregiver.

  8. I don't blame Bill not wanting to stay in hospital any longer than he had to. They are constantly people walking in and out of the room, there is no privacy, the toilets and showers are over-used, other peoples' tvs drive you nuts and the food may be very strange. Having your own physiotherapist visiting your home is excellent and having a new, functional chair is even better.

  9. Good to hear that Bill is home and I am sure he will get better day by day now. I hope you will survive in the kitchen, it's not an easy job especially after so many years. Wishing you both the best.

  13. So good to see Bill back home, and good medicine for him too. Gregg said “Good man Bill!” when he saw him eating his frankfurthers and sauerkraut. That’s because these are two of Gregg’s favorite foods, and I understand that sauerkraut is a superfood, at least that is what Gregg tells me. Sadly I am not a fan. The new chair looks great and will be a big help I know. I am sure you are an excellent cook and he will enjoy your food. Speedy healing from both of us to Bill and please take good care of yourself also. The stress is always higher when a loved one is under the weather. We often sometimes forget to take good care of ourselves. You can kick me later ;)

  14. So pleased Bill is back home with you where he belongs. Pleasing to read he is slowly getting better.
Those chairs must be good and helpful.
Cooking - you have been lucky with 30 years of not cooking but it never goes away so you remember how to do it when you have to.
    Take care.

  15. Thanks for the update, Diane, and hope that Bill will continue to feel better in familiar surroundings. That new chair should prove very useful and he did look comfortable in it. as for cooking again, you will get back into meal prep and simple is always the best and often the tastiest.

  17. So happy Bill is able to be home again. My mom had a chair like that and if worked quite well for getting up and down and relaxing in comfortable positions. I hope you enjoy your new position as head cook. It’s a job I’d just as soon give up to someone else.

  19. You will be busy with nursing and cooking duties, Diane but I'm sure Bill will be appreciating your loving dedication. He is a lucky man to have you and his lovely daughters.

  20. Oh my goodness, Diane! Our last email with each other was July 20 - can't believe 3 days later you and Bill had this trauma. I'm so glad he's back home and recuperating now. It sounds like he's been through the mill (though I did have to smile at the "screw loose" mention..,). I'm thankful your girls could come home to help you and cheer you both up. Bill is always smiling - he doesn't look sick even when he feels crappy. Good luck with the cooking!
