Tenterfield is a small town in northern NSW in the New England Region, which is a very fertile, cool, highland area. It was originally inhabited by the Bundjalung, Jukeembal and Kamilaroi people. The first European came in 1840's. Sir Stuart Donaldson, a London merchant had 18,000 sheep on a station which he named Tenterfield Station. By 1870 there were churches, a school, the School of Arts, hotels and "the Chronicle" were established and there was a population of 900. In 1886 the Great Northern Railway was opened it was originally the junction of NSW and QLD rail lines.
In those days Australia was a collection of colonies all administered by England. Some of the population wanted all the colonies to join together and become a federation of Australia. During this campaign, Sir Henry Parkes delivered his famous federation speech in the School of Arts in Tenterfield in 1889, which ultimately led to the federation of all Australian States in 1901. Since then Tenterfield is known as the 'Birthplace of our Nation'.
The School of Arts is now a Museum and cafe. Bill and Peter, who both have trouble walking and standing for any length of time, returned to the Bowls Club for a drink and lunch, while Val and I explored the museum and had lunch there and walked home dropping into some lovely country dress shops on the way.

What beautiful gardens, parks and views!
the photos of the trees are all picture postcard perfect! that glass wall is absolutely gorgeous. I love the perspective of that photo... glad you had your friend to wander with and he had his to sit and enjoy each others company. Bob and I used to enjoy going to all the bird preserves and parks, but now he can't walk far or stand for any period of time. I have no one to go with, all my friends are like Bob, they can't walk/stand and shop in motorized wheel chairs.
ReplyDeleteHello,

It would indeed be a beautiful walk!

The name Tenterfield is unfamiliar to me, considering its important place in history. The trees look great, even if they've not reached their maximum colour just yet.
ReplyDeleteExcellent, as usual, report on Tenterfield and the history attached to this town.
ReplyDeleteThere was a strong sporting ethic in Tenterfield, I recall, from the 1950/60s.
Quite a few boys from that area went to "Joey's" ( St. Joseph's College, Hunters Hill).
They were excellent in all sports
Cheers

I'm envious. I love a road trip and yours looks wonderful. Love the photo of the colourful trees, especially the pretty street.
ReplyDeleteWe both like Tenterfield and have stayed there many times going up north or returning.
ReplyDeleteThe museum is interesting and a fair bit of history surrounds that area.
Thanks for sharing the history of the town. Lots of important historical buildings there. Lovely photos of the trees.
ReplyDeleteA lovely and informative post Diane. Great photos of this super trip and it is always so very welcome to see you and Bill in them.
ReplyDeleteRoad trips are such fun. Glad to see you had nice weather for yours.
ReplyDeleteRoad trips are wonderful at this time of year with all the autumn leaves. We are off a couple of trips over the next two weeks. It is hard to predict when the leaves will hit their peak. Some trees colour up much earlier than others.
ReplyDeleteYour photos show some pretty darn good Autumn colors to my way of thinking. Perfect timing is kind of hard whether spring flowers or fall color or wild birds and animals. They just don't behave as if Disney orchestrated their behavior for tourists! I really liked learning the history of your area and the places you visited. thanks for the interesting and succinct information -- you make it fun to learn. (Something about once a teacher ... )) Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteAlways nice to do a road trip.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed seeing your photographs.
Happy May Wishes.
All the best Jan
I must write that the view back to the township is my favorite. I can smell the fresh air.
