BRISBANE PORTRAIT PRIZE

We went to New Farm Park to photograph the beautiful Jacaranda trees but unfortunately the rain from the day before had knocked down most of the blooms. So we went to the Power House next to the park to see the Brisbane Portrait exhibition.

There were some Jacaranda trees still with blooms.

Fallen blooms floating in the puddles.

A self portrait by Pat Hoffie depicting her visiting her daughter in hospital after she contracted Covid I9 after not seeing her for 6 weeks.

Anne-Marie Zanetti painted Dean Merlo who's name is synonymous with coffee. He is a famous for introducing Australia to Merlo Coffee. The Power House was repurposed and renovated some time ago to house exhibitions, theatre performances and restaurants. Much of the machinery and later graffiti remains in the building.

Rick Everingham painted Vince Anello famous for his hospitality and humour at his Deli in New Farm.

Jaq Grantford painted his friend, Andrew Betterham, a famous Brisbane musician. If you look closely there are millions of music notes surrounding him.

  2. Lucky you to be able to visit exhibitions, here everything has closed. Haven't been in a museum for ages ago it seems.

  3. It's too bad the rain knocked down many of the leaves from the trees, but those that remained are gorgeous. I also enjoyed the portraits that you shared with us.

  4. I look forward to your annual jacaranda tree photos and as always, they are so beautiful. The paintings are interesting and I especially like the last one with the musician surrounded by his music.

  5. These are all absolutely beautiful and if you had not told me they were paintings I would have thought they were photographed there so details! My favorite is the very last one that is just absolutely awesome. We had a jacaranda tree like this one in our other house in St Petersburg I miss it but Bob doesn't he didn't like all the blooms falling on the ground

    Happy weekend wishes.

    All the best Jan

  7. Love those Jacaranda trees Diane. We're lucky enough to have one grow down here, it battled through its first few years with frost but has become stronger. Your photos are beautiful of them each year.
Those portraits are fabulous, there are such incredible artists!

  9. Shame the rain did damage, if not rain then its the wind.

  10. It's a pity that the rain has damaged these beautiful trees ! I would like to go a museum but even that is closed ! I wonder why ? There is enough space. More than in the crowded trains and buses !!

  13. Firstly, wow on the paintings. They are so life like. I absolutely love Jacaranda trees in full bloom. I can feel your disappointment about the wind blowing off the leaves before you could catch them in their fullness. That has happened to me for the last 3 years when it comes to photographing cherry blossoms which are another of my favourite. It seems these past few years we've had very inclement weather and the blossoms which are so fleeting anyway last an even shorter time. I hope your friend Pat's daughter recovers soon. It is very sad what is happening around the world. Stay safe.

  14. Amazing paintings. How I miss jacaranda trees, we had one road in Salisbury (now Harare, Zimbabwe) that had alternate white and blue trees down the length, it was stunning when in full flower. We had a white one as well in our garden that we left in Johannesburg. Stay safe, t'other Diane

  17. Gorgeous jacaranda tree even with less blooms and the blossoms on the wet ground also. I love that color! Great portraits you shared. Jaq Grantford’s painting of his friend is amazing. It would be very interesting to learn how long it took him to paint it, and to see the process. I have often wondered that with certain paintings. Thanks for sharing these Diane :)

    The portraits are fantastic!

  19. The jacarandas you did catch on time are still lovely, but I know what you mean about spring flowering trees ... the ones we have here have a brief span of perfection anyway and wind or hard rain (more likely here) often end it even more prematurely. .... the portraits are excellent, capturing the subjects’ personalities . So glad you are able to get out and about again.
