VISITORS

We had our lovely friends, Peter and Margaret come to stay for a week. They are from the Hunter Valley region of NSW (famous for its wine). While they were here we visited a mutual friend in hospital and went shopping for a camera. We had many lunches out at Moreton Bay and the Gold Coast, took in a few movies and visited an Art Gallery. (I didn't get any blogging done, too busy having fun)
We had lunch at Cleveland. We ordered calamari rings but they threw in a few baby octopus too. TOH* wasn't impressed.

Another day we took Margaret and Peter to the Queensland Art Gallery.

They were keen to see the Yirrkala Drawings because Margaret and Peter used to teach aboriginals  in the Northern Territory and they are very interested in the people's culture.

"Yirrkala Drawings’ is the first major exhibition of a group of crayon drawings on brown paper by senior Aboriginal leaders and bark painters from Yirrkala in north-east Arnhem Land; 365 drawings were produced in 1946–47 with materials provided by young anthropologists Ronald M and Catherine H Berndt. These brilliant, exuberant drawings — 81 of which are included in the exhibition — express the intricacies of Yolngu culture, clan relationships and connection to country, in dynamic lines infilled with rich colour. Developed by the Art Gallery of New South Wales in conjunction with Buku-Larrnggay Mulka Art Centre at Yirrkala and the Berndt Museum at the University of Western Australia."

 The totems had intricate patterns

TOH was reading a book next to me one day and he asked, "What is a Rubenesque woman?"I explained that it is a woman with the similar shape of the women that artist Rubens painted, well rounded and voluptuous. So while we were at the gallery we sought out one of Rubens' women. Now TOH knows.

On the way out I admired the architecture and was taken by the juxtaposition of the statue and the person standing. We left the cultural centre and walked under the Victoria Bridge to South Bank, had lunch and caught the bus home for a nap.

  3. Reminds me of the first time I became aware of Reuben's. We went to a gallery in Brussels. It has really stuck in my mind.

  4. Yep, the baby octopus doesn't look all that great to me either! Your friends, Peter and Margaret had interesting careers and super that you all visited the relevant art gallery. I am SO impressed with the last photo, Diane. Truly artistic composition on your part!

  5. Hallo Diane!
I have not blogged in over a year, and have not read any either. We have moved out to our summer house. It is only +8 degrees C and blows ice cold northerly wind, so I sit at the computer and try to find something to do.
So fun that you will continue with your adventure. See you again soon

Apparently your TOH is not so interested in Rubenesque forms and prefers the skinnier version, lol !

  12. That is nice to have friends over. The art gallery looks great and the Rubens picture is a good example of the way he saw women.

  21. Great pictures - I do like photographs taken in galleries, they always seem to contain an element of calm and culture, like a wind-borne aroma floating from a cultural barbecue

  23. Friends visits also give us the chance to visit anew or revisit interesting places and also dine out as you did Diane. Enjoyed the museum visit through yiur ohoto tour and wondered about the films you saw and what camera was bought. Expect that you will be telling about these in a future post.

  24. TOH gets a gong for his reaction to the octopus, though I agree with Sandra that calamari is equally yucky.
I also agree with many other commentors that the last shot is brilliant.

  28. We had a lovely stay with Dianne and Bill. I took my computer and had many lessons from Diane which has taken me to another step on the ladder so to speak. They assisted us with the purchase of a new camera which I haven't had much time as yet to explore. Loved the warmer weather and our visit to the Museum as well as going to 2 films! Going out for lunch is lots of fun when you have good company. I gave my octopus to Diane and Bill! Love the Blog Diane. Love Margaret and Peter
