MEMORIES FROM 1988

1988 was a big year for us. We sold our little house and had a bigger one built. Unfortunately, the builder went broke. Fortunately, our Building Society Bank pulled us through the mess. We ended up with a new house but it took 18 months instead of 18 weeks to build. In the same year the World Expo was held in Brisbane and our girls were performing there nearly everyday in their school marching band. Australian schools had very few marching bands but the girls' school brought out American and Canadian Marching Bands to teach our kids.

This little house was getting too small for two teenage girls and only one bathroom so we bought a block of land and engaged a builder.

Every weekend we visited the block to see the progress. Sonya and Bill.

We built on the corner of a cul-de-sac.

At first progress was good but when it reached this stage it slowed down and took ages to finish.

Because of the delay we had to rent a house because we had sold the little one. The girls were both at John Paul College.

They both joined the JPC Marching Band, they both played the trumpet (like their father). They practiced on the school oval.

EXPO 88 was held at South Bank, which had been a run down wharf area and transformed into a fabulous entertainment area.

The girls marched in the daily parade.

They often played in the Piazza, marching in complicated routines.   Sonya is on the end.

Loads of people came to watch everyday. Carol in the middle.

Carol third from left  and Sonya fifth from left with hat blown off. The JPC Marching Band was invited to play at the Calgary Stampede where they won the competition. The Canadians taught them so well that they took out the top prize. We were very proud of them.

  1. There are some nice memories and no doubt some memories of stressful times. My father working with his brother and father, could put up a timber framed house in a few weeks, and it could be finished in around eight weeks.

  3. What a brilliant idea to hold EXPO 88 at South Bank. I remember when it had been a run down wharf area but I don't know what it looks like now.

  5. I can image who your girls and the others were very proud of themselves and rightly so, it's not that easy to march and play an instrument.
Gosh you were fortunate that the Bank helped you out in that time of crisis, must have been an awful feeling at the time.

  7. I see you are also digging out old photos ! I just did the same when we had our house built ! Same story the house was put up very quickly, but the basement took ages. Instead of 6 months we could only move in a year and a half later ! Nice pictures of the parades !

  8. Just wonderful to see these images of Expo. What a marvellous time for Brisbane and then left with amazing Southbank to enjoy. I wonder does JPC still have a marching band? I never hear of it. You must be very proud of your girls, and especially so at that time.

  9. Oh how wonderful to see these memories and photos and what a nice place the house is on close to the forest. What a beautiful uniforms the band members have. In the Netherland they had marching bands but they were never connected to schools and more for adults and young people alike

  10. What an exciting time and perhaps a difficult on too. Glad you finally got into your larger home for a while.
Love the photos of the marching band. Brings back memories of my high school years and our winning competitions and being in parades.
You have a lot to be proud of.

  14. A nice look back and glad to read your new home finally was completed (finally) but too bad the delay meant you had to rent another home for a while. Also, these were nice vintage photos of your daughters in the marching band.
