BIRTHDAY BEAR IS GOING YABBY PUMPING

Our Birthday Bear group was a bit late celebrating Paul's birthday, which was back in September but some of us were away at that time and we had to have our celebration a bit later.
Paul is a keen fisherman and keen fishermen are often seen on the beaches with a yabby pump, pumping in the sand to suck up yabbies for bait.

Birthday Bear has his own special small sized yabby pump (made by George) and a bucket to collect the yabbies in. If you look closely you will see he has already caught some. Bear is dressed in his fishing clothes (thanks to Ann) ready to go with Paul next time.

Birthday Bear  has caught some yabbies.

Paul is checking out BB's yabby pump.
We are all so proud of Paul to have reached this birthday. He was diagnosed with Mesothelioma three years ago. He has had lots of unpleasant treatment and operations too. He has been very ill but he is a strong fighter and now he is in remission for the time being.

Mary, moi, Chris, Bear, Bob, Helen, Paul, Ann and half of George.

We celebrated at Ceylon Inn, Graceville.
It is an Indian restaurant. Bill had lamb curry

I had a lamb dish too.

with steamed rice.

  3. Happy birthday, Paul, and happy yabbying! Diane, on the East Coast of South Africa (just below Mozambique) the fishermen pump for mud shrimp in the same way. Interesting post. Jo

  4. Another Birthday Bear outing. Great. My father used to pump pippies, whatever they are with a similar pump. He used them as bait for something.

  5. Pippies are a shell fish also used for bait or eaten too.

  6. I'd never heard of anything like the Birthday Bear tradition before but it appears to be both a sensible solution to the present-giving dilemma and a lot of fun. I mighty just adopt it (the idea, not the bear).

  9. Birthday Bear certainly looks as if he's an expert at Yabby Pumping. I guess that's why he's got some so quickly. Thanks for the education as well as the great photos.

  10. Happy Birthday to Paul. He looks so healthy and happy... Attitude is so important as we age and go through health problems. Hope he lives many more years and enjoys his fishing.

Never heard of a Yabby or Yabby Pumpking. Interesting!!!!! Thanks for the explanation. Our fishermen here use minnows when they fish!

    Hugs,
    Betsy

  12. There's the birthday bear, it's good to see the bear made it to Paul's birthday and happy birthday to Paul. The food looks scrumptious and what a better way to spend a birthday celebration in the company of dear friends... and birthday bear?

    Have a wonderful weekend Dianne.

  13. I love your birthday bear tradition, Diane and, like Fun60, hadn't realized Birthday Bear was so tall.
This outfit is one of the best yet, I think, complete with pump and crustaceans. And Paul deserves it after the struggle he has been through. I hope his remission is many years in length.

  15. I hadn't heard of the second type of yabbie but I have seen fishermen with their pumps ... I'm not well versed with fishing, seaside culture.
